99 distractions…and a blog isn’t one

Wow, too much time has passed since my last post. It doesn’t seem like a month has passed. What have I been doing? 1. Reading book three in the Game of Thrones series trying to keep up with the current episode and failing miserably. 2. Winding up the school year at both schools. 3. Catching up with everyone in town/out of school for the summer. 4. Trying new restaurants like Feast BBQ in New Albany…and old favorites, too. 5. Waking…

I am a firm believer in the school of thought that the book is always better than the movie. It is with this in mind that I have been awaiting The Great Gatsby with great trepidation. Gatsby is my favorite book period. To me it’s more than a great story about the disappointment one feels after getting exactly what he has wished for only to find out it’s tarnished and broken. Fitzgerald is a master wordsmith. His writing is beautiful…

I have had a friend or two ask why I post my daily outfit. I have two reasons. The first reason is purely selfish. By posting my daily wardrobe, I have a visual archive of past combinations and a record of what worked and what fell short. The second reason is for a friend of mine who has trouble mixing and matching the pieces in her wardrobe. She uses my photos as a guide to change up her daily look….

time sure does fly…

Time flies when you’re having fun is an often repeated adage, but does it really? In my experience, time flies no matter you mood or condition. It doesn’t seem possible that it’s almost Derby day. The winter passed quickly, and luckily for us, mildly. The days may have been gray and cold, but they were not snow-filled and icy. I have still making good on my efforts to try new things. I have gone to new restaurants, tried new food…

I found an old shoebox under the bed in my guest room and it was full of cassette tapes. Not just any old tapes, but all of them were mix tapes. Ah mix tapes…the original playlist. Those tapes represent more than just a compilation of music. They are full of memories, they are historical documents. You made a tape for every mood and every occasion. There were the fun mix tapes  you played at parties or the slow jam mix tape…

too much to do…too little time…

The past 30 days has been spent reading, memorizing and re-learning information in order to take my comprehensive exams. My PhD program has three steps to completion: coursework, comprehensive exams and dissertation. I take my exams at the beginning of next week and every spare minute has been spent in preparation….except for that nasty weekend spent with the norovirus. I could study 24/7 for another 30 days and not feel like I am ready, but here it goes regardless. Despite…

Even though I had to work, it’s still game day! In honor of the No. 1 Hoosiers taking on No. 4 Spartans, I gave my Hoosiers some love. You can make a tee shirt appropriate for business casual with the right accessories. I love this necklace from J Crew. Green is my favorite color and the combination of the green, black and pale blue stones caught my eye. Worn with a chambray shirt, black cardigan an green skinnies, the necklace…

putting my best foot forward…

Been a busy few days. Spending time doing research and reading for my comprehensive exams coming up in March. However, I am still keeping up with my efforts to wear all of the great pieces in my wardrobe. It’s been nice going to work and  being out knowing that I took the time to put myself together. It’s a mini-boost of self confidence.

it’s vintage?

On Friday, I came to the sad realization that the sweater I wore was older than all but one of my students. In December of 1994, I was a first year teacher trying to build a working wardrobe. I asked for several items of clothing for Christmas. Among my gifts were three sweaters from J Crew, two of them from the men’s section of the catalog. When I put on the green and beige patterned wool sweater, I remembered exactly…

virtual fashion show or fashion statement…

For the past few days, I have been posting photos of my day’s wardrobe choices. For me, the photo are multipurpose. The photos allow me to see what the pieces will look like together and serve and as an archive of sorts. I often hear that teachers and educators, as a profession, tend to be fashion challenged. I do not consider myself to be fashion challenged, in the least. In fact, I think I am very capable in the fashion…
